Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South, Kathleen Funchion, has told a gathering of civil society organisations, marking European Week for Action Girls, (EWAG) the EU must become more relevant for girls’ and young people and actively protect their rights.
MEP Funchion said:
“We must ensure that platforms for discussion and decision-making within the EU are diverse and inclusive. This is especially vital in a world where women and girls are disproportionately impacted by genocide, war, and conflict. Their perspectives are needed more than ever.
“Listening to and engaging with young people is crucial not only for creating a more just and inclusive Europe but for tackling the deep-rooted issues of misogyny, sexism, and inequality that many girls and young women continue to face.
“The European Parliament can strengthen the role of girls and young people, and this I believe could be achieved through a dedicated children’s committee.
“During my time as Cathaoirleach of the Joint Oireachtas Committee for Children, Disability, Equality, Integration and Youth, I was adamant young people and particularly children’s voices would be prioritised. Young people are the experts on the issues that affect them, and policymakers like myself have a duty to listen directly to their lived experiences.
“Despite the stellar work of the committee I don’t believe they receive the recognition they deserve in Ireland, despite the highest ever year on year increase in funding for the Department of Children, Disability, Equality, Integration and Youth, only €7m has been allocated for the expansion of youth work, out of a total €8.3bn given to the Department in Budget 2025.
“It is so important that the European Parliament ensures every policy is assessed for its impact on girls and young people. By integrating their needs and concerns into the decisions we make, we can work together towards a future that is fair, inclusive, and representative of all voices.
“To build a better Europe where every young person’s voice is heard, we need continued commitment, action, and solidarity across all levels of society.
“I will be an unapologetic voice for our young people and children in Europe.”
