“Varadkar comments highlight the need for a citizens assembly on Unity” – MacManus

Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North-West has said that the comments made by an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar highlight the need for the establishment of a citizens assembly on Irish Reunification.

Speaking from Donegal, where the Sinn Féin MEP was attending a number of constituency engagements MacManus said:

“I listened closely to the interview with an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on RTÉ Prime Time yesterday evening, and when he spoke on the potential for a United Ireland, an Taoiseach said he has thought a lot about how a United Ireland would work, and that the shared island unit within his department are closely studying the differences between North and South.”

“Whilst these comments are welcome, they also highlight the need for his government to establish a citizens assembly on Irish Unity, so people across our island can participate in the conversation on what a United Ireland might look like.”

MacManus concluded by emphasising the importance of carefully planning and preparing for constitutional change:

“People across the island are engaging in both formal and informal conversations and discussions on a United Ireland, and there is an acceptance that a referendum will happen within the next few years. That is why it is absolutely crucial we carefully plan and prepare for constitutional change on our island.” ENDS
