There can be no tolerance for hate crime – Hargey

Sinn Féin MLA Deirdre Hargey has said there can be no tolerance for hate crime after reports that show a concerning rise in race hate crimes in South Belfast and across the north.

Responding to a report in the Detail, the South Belfast MLA said:

“Reports that hate crimes across the north have risen by more than 44% in just five years, and in South Belfast have more than doubled, is deeply concerning.

“It is also concerning that people are reluctant to report race hate attacks to police and I would encourage anyone to report any such incidents to the PSNI.

“I will continue to engage with our minority ethnic groups to ensure their concerns are addressed and to help build an inclusive community.

“There can be no tolerance for racism or hate crimes and no one should be targeted because of their race, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or identity.”
