Sinn Féin MLA Aisling Reilly has said the Irish language is seen in every part of life and grows stronger each day.
The West Belfast MLA was speaking at an event launching Seachtain na Gaeilge which she described as ‘a celebration of our language, a celebration of our culture, a celebration of our history but – more importantly – a celebration of the future ahead of us.’
Aisling Reilly said:
“Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia offers an incredible opportunity to celebrate and promote Irish language, music and culture – here and across the globe.
“As a proud Gaeilgeoir I am delighted that The Executive Office is making real progress towards implementing the provisions within the Identity and Language Act.
“Preparations are at an advanced stage of establishing an Office of Identity and Cultural Expression and appointing an Irish Language Commissioner and a Commissioner for the Ulster Scots and the Ulster British tradition.”
The West Belfast MLA concluded by encouraging people to attend and participate in events as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge saying:
“The influence of the Irish language can be seen in every corner of life, from community groups to media, arts, education and politics.
“I know that the first Belfast branch of Conradh na Gaeilge was established 130 years ago, in east Belfast on Beersbridge Road. As we look back at what we have achieved since then, despite the challenges we faced, the outcome of that work is evident here tonight.
“Let’s not just talk about the future of the Irish language – let’s build it together.”
