Sinn Féin spokesperson on Transport and Communications, Martin Kenny TD, has called on the Taoiseach to intervene to ensure that Aer Lingus management return to the negotiating table with IALPA representatives as a matter of urgency.
His comments were made as the pilot union this evening served strike notice on Aer Lingus after the company had earlier published a list of cancelled flights due to a work-to-rule action by IALPA members.
Speaking this evening, Teachta Kenny said:
“My colleague and Sinn Féin spokesperson on Workers’ Rights, Enterprise and Employment, Louise O’Reilly, this morning wrote to the Taoiseach urging him to make a decisive intervention ahead of the planned industrial action by Aer Lingus pilots.
“Further developments and escalations in the hours since have added even more stress and uncertainty for passengers, pilots, cabin crew and ground staff.
“First, we received notice of flight cancellations, which was quickly followed this evening by strike notice being served on Aer Lingus with IALPA pilots stating their intention to hold a strike between 5am and 1pm on June 29th unless a new pay deal is worked out in the meantime.
“This escalation has occurred due to reported threats of legal action towards IALPA negotiators representing pilots.
“The reports by IALPA of this antagonistic behaviour towards their members is exceptionally concerning.
“It is vital now for negotiations to begin again so a resolution can be found without any further disruption. Aer Lingus has a duty to treat both their passengers and their staff with respect.
“But the government cannot stand idly by either. Now is not the time for a hands-off approach.
“The Taoiseach must pick up the phone and proactively engage with all parties to bring an end to this dispute.”
