Survey highlights government failure to tackle staffing emergency in schools – Darren O’Rourke TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education and Youth, Darren O’Rourke TD, says a survey conducted by the Teacher’s Union of Ireland (TUI) highlights the failure of government to tackle the staffing emergency in schools.

The survey, conducted in 111 schools by the Principals and Deputy Principals’ Association of the TUI found that 64% of schools have unfilled vacancies due to recruitment and retention difficulties, while 20% have been forced to drop subjects as a result.

Just 3% of respondents believed the government is doing enough to tackle the recruitment/retention crisis in second level schools.

Speaking in response to the survey findings, Teachta O’Rourke said:

“These findings paint a stark picture. The staffing emergency is having a real impact on the ability of schools to put qualified teachers in front of classes, and to deliver the full range of subjects to students. 20% of schools have had to drop subjects. This is very significant.

“It is clear that graduates are voting with their feet. This is evidenced by the fact that the survey found that 75% of schools advertised positions in the previous six months for which no teacher applied at all. The survey further found that the most significant cause of teacher recruitment and retention difficulties is “more attractive options for new graduates in other employment.

“The new Minister, Helen McEntee TD, must change tack and depart from the approach of her predecessor. She must tackle the staffing emergency in schools as a matter of priority.

“There are a number of key measures that the Minister could immediately prioritise in this regard. For example, the awarding of full incremental credits for those returning with international experience, ensuring new graduates have full hours, and reviewing the Professional Masters of Education (PME) and the potential for alternative pathways.

“And, of course, the Minister should work with her government colleagues to ensure the crippling housing and accommodation crisis is addressed for teachers. This is a major driver of the staffing crisis.

“Finally, and directly related to the findings of this survey and the repeated calls of teachers and schools leaders, the new Minister must reassess her predecessor’s plans for the rollout of Senior Cycle reform. To proceed in a rushed manner, at a time of significant capacity constraints in the system, would be a recipe for disaster.”
