Success of Irish film must be sustained into future and benefit workers and audiences nationwide – Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Gaeilge, Gaeltacht, Arts, Culture, Tourism and Media, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, has today launched Craolú – Sinn Féin’s 10 Priorities for the Audiovisual and Film Arts.

This builds on the 10 overarching priorities for supporting Irish artists and arts which Sinn Féin published earlier this week following a vibrant Dáil Ealaíon Arts Assembly at which more than 100 representatives from across the arts discussed what is needed for the sector to thrive.

“Ireland’s audiovisual arts, which have gone from strength to strength in recent years, depend on the artistry of cinematographers, actors, writers, producers, directors, editors, composers, costumers, designers, script supervisors, animators, visual effects, hair and make-up, stunt artists, and crew, to name but a few, who make film come to life.

“From unprecedented Oscar wins and nominations to the success of the Kneecap film at Sundance, it could be said that we have entered a golden age for Irish film, with our national language at its heart.

“The job of the next Government is to ensure that we build on this tremendous success, but also that the benefits reach everybody in the sector and can be sustained into the future. This means putting workers’ rights and copyright at the heart of our approach, including by investigating ways the current Section 481 tax relief fails workers and engaging in strategic planning to grow the sector.

“We need to develop a long-term replacement for the Regional Uplift and make the most of the options available under the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive to provide new funding streams for Irish productions.

“Sinn Féin is committed to replacing the archaic and unsustainable hybrid licence fee model with direct exchequer funding for RTÉ, to increasing funding for TG4 and Irish language audiovisual arts, and exploring options for a new global Irish audiovisual network.

“We are also determined to end geo-blocking and partitionism in our public service broadcasting and audiovisual sector, and to develop a dedicated strategy for gaming and virtual reality.

“I invite film workers and performers, scriptwriters and directors, producers and audiences to read the detail of our proposed approach and let us know what they think. This is one of a number of policies being published focused on different art sectors.”

Ní mór dúinn an rath i scannáin na hÉireann a bhuanú agus a scaipeadh ar oibrithe agus lucht féachana fud fad na tíre – Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Inniú, sheol urlabhraí Gaeilge, Gaeltachta, Ealaíon, Cultúir, Turasóireachta agus Meán, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, Craolú – 10 dTosaíochtaí Shinn Féin do na hEalaíona Físe agus Closamhairc.

Tagann sé seo sna sála ar na 10 dTosaíochtaí uilíocha chun tacú le healaíontóirí agus ealaíon na hÉireann a d’fhoilsithe Sinn Féin níos luaithe sa tseachtain tar éis Dáil Ealaíon bríomhar ina ghlac breis is 100 ionadaí páirt as gach chearn de na healaíona chun plé a dhéanamh faoi cad a theastaíonn chun go n-éireoidh leis an earnáil.

Dúirt an Teachta Ó Snodaigh TD:

“Tá ealaíona closamhairc na hÉireann tar éis dul ó neart go neart le déanaí, agus braitheann siad ar ealaíontacht a chruthaíonn cineamatagrafaithe, aisteoirí, scríbhneoirí, léiritheoirí, stiúrthóirí, eagarthóirí, cumadóirí, táilliúirí, dearthóirí, maoirseoirí script, beochantóirí, maisíocht físe, gruaig agus smidiú, éachtóirí, agus criú, gan ach roinnt bheag a lua, a thugann beocht do scannán.

“Idir na gaiscí as cuimse bainte amach ag na hOscars agus acht an scannáin Kneecap ag Sundance, féadfaí a rá go bhfuil ré órga linn do scannánaíocht na hÉireann agus ár dteanga náisiúnta ag lár an aonaigh.

“Beidh sé mar ról ag an gcéad Rialtas eile a chinntiú go dtógfar ar an rath ollmhór seo, ach freisin go sroicheann an tairbhe gach duine san earnáil agus gur féidir iad a choimeád ag teacht amach anseo. Ciallaíonn sé seo gur gá cearta oibrithe agus cóipcheart a lárnú inár gcur chuige, trí iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar na bealaí a loiceann an fhaoiseamh cánach Alt 481 reatha ar oibrithe agus trí pleanáil straitéiseach a dhéanamh chun an earnáil a fhás.

“Ní mór dúinn athmhúnla fad-théarmach a fhorbairt don Ardú Céatadáin Réigiúnach agus na roghanna atá os ár gcomhair faoin dTreoir um Seirbhísí Meán Closamhairc AE a úsáid chun sruthanna nua maoinithe a sholáthar do léirithe Éireannacha.

“Tá Sinn Féin tiomanta fáil réidh leis an múnla hibrideach as dáta agus neamhinbhuanaithe ceadúnais teilifíse agus maoiniú díreach ón státchiste a chur ina áit do RTÉ, chomh maith le maoiniú do TG4 agus na healaíona closamhairc Gaeilge a mhéadú agus roghanna a mheas maidir le líonra nua domhanda closamhairc ag Éirinn.

“Táimid dáiríre freisin deireadh a chur leis an ngeobhlocáil agus críochdheighilteachas sa chraoltóireacht seirbhíse phoiblí agus san earnáil closamhairc, agus faoi straitéis ar leith a fhorbairt do cluichí agus an réaltacht fhíorúil.

“Fiafraím ar oibrithe físe, taibheoirí, scríbhneoirí scripte, stiúrthóirí, léiritheoirí agus lucht féachana na sonraí a léamh ar ár gcur chuige molta agus a gcuid tuairimí a roinnt linn. Tá sé seo mar chuid de sraith polasaithe atá á foilsiú againn ar earnáil éagsúil ealaíon.”
