South Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has called for stronger workers’ rights to drive economic growth.
The Party’s Worker’s Rights spokesperson was speaking after the Economy Minister confirmed she plans to bring proposals to Good Jobs Employment Rights Bill to the Executive for agreement in the coming months following public consultation.
Declan Kearney said:
“This will be the most progressive employment legislation ever introduced in the North.
“A good jobs programme must be integral to a productive, fair and competitive economy.
“This needs to be a regional economic base which ensures workers are paid fair wages, guaranteed secure employment, and provides workers and their families with a good standard of living.
“With cross-party support it can help build a strong and productive workforce for the future, with workers’ rights, union recognition and collective bargaining at its core.
“This is the best foundation for growth and productivity within the all-island and world economies; and crucially, one which also rewards workers and families, trade unions and employers, and our local businesses.”
The South Antrim MLA also welcomed plans for a Good Work Charter consultation, saying:
“Industries with the potential to create high-quality jobs must be stimulated.
“The Economy Minister has confirmed she would work alongside the Labour Relations Agency and business and trade union leaders to help design a charter that will support businesses here to maintain and create good jobs for all. Cooperation between social partners and stakeholders is the way forward for designing and implementing economic and industrial strategy.”
