Sinn Féin publish legislation to update the Unfair Dismissals Act – Louise O’Reilly TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Enterprise and Workers’ Rights, Louise O’Reilly TD, has today published legislation to improve the awards available for workers who have been dismissed from their work unfairly.

Teachta O’Reilly said:

“Sinn Féin has developed a set of comprehensive protections for workers which will include the ‘Right to Organize’ in the workplace. Updating the Unfair Dismissals Act (1977-2015) is the first step in this.

“All too often workers win their cases in the Workplace Relations Commission but find that the award is capped at four weeks’ pay.

“This is hardly any deterrent for employers dismissing workers without just cause.

“Our legislation will increase the awards cap to two years’ salary. We believe that this is proportionate and sufficient to act as a deterrent for employers dismissing their workers without good cause.”
