Sinn Féin offers full support to delivery riders – Louise O’Reilly TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Louise O’Reilly TD, has offered her support to delivery riders who are today protesting poor pay and conditions from food delivery platforms such as Deliveroo, UberEats and Just Eat.

Teachta O’Reilly said:

“Delivery riders are today engaged in protest regarding the undermining of their pay and conditions by delivery platforms such as Deliveroo, UberEats and Just Eat.

“For many years riders and drivers have been protesting for greater support and protections in terms of their pay, safety, and workers’ rights.

“However, the situation has continued to deteriorate for workers and in some instances minimum delivery payment rates have fallen to as little as €1 per order.

“It may also shock people to know that these riders and drivers work without many of the workers’ rights and protections that the majority take for granted.

“As the platforms they work for classify them as self-employed, these workers often make less than the minimum wage, are not covered by health and safety legislation, and do not receive other employment benefits.

“It is imperative that food delivery platforms engage with delivery riders and their representatives regarding their concerns.

“It is also not realistic for platforms to maintain that workers do not want better pay and conditions when they have spent several years lobbying against EU legislation to improve the position of delivery riders and other platform workers.

“Finally, I would again urge the Irish government to support the strongest possible EU Platform Workers Directive at European Council level, so the working conditions for delivery riders and drivers can be improved in terms of determination of employment status and rights regarding algorithmic management.”
