Senator Paul Gavan not contesting the Seanad elections

Sinn Féin Senator Paul Gavan has decided to not actively contest the forthcoming Seanad election.

Senator Gavan had received a nomination from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to contest for a seat on the Labour Panel.

Senator Gavan said:

“I believe I have established a good track record of work and delivery over the past nine years both here at home and through my work at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

“However, having taken time over Christmas to consider matters, I do not believe there is anything to be gained by actively contesting for a seat on the Labour panel. The party has nominated and endorsed two other candidates for this panel.

“I want to thank everyone who has worked with me over my two terms. I am proud of my work record in the Seanad, particularly with regard to standing up for workers rights, and social justice both here in Ireland and internationally through my work in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Throughout my time I have always tried to stay true to Republican Socialist politics.

“I am the only opposition Senator to have steered two bills successfully through all stages of the Seanad. These were the Protection of Employees Tips Bill, and the Safe Access Zones Bill. The government was subsequently pressed into passing identical bills in line with the goals of our legislation.

“I have one last engagement to fulfil before I finish my term-attendance at the forthcoming PACE winter session where I will represent the United European Left in key debates on the Genocide in Palestine and Immigration.”
