Seanad sessions on constitutional future of Ireland ‘an important opportunity for inclusive dialogue’ – Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile

Sinn Féin’s Leader in the Seanad, Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile, has welcomed tomorrow’s discussions at the Seanad Public Consultation Committee on the Constitutional Future of the Island of Ireland, as an important opportunity for diverse, respectful and inclusive discussions.

Speaking today, Senator Ó Donnghaile said:

“Tomorrow, the Seanad Public Consultation Committee on the Constitutional Future of the Island of Ireland will hold its first session, in a historic first for the Oireachtas.

“It is a very welcome and positive step that these discussions are taking place and I am looking forward to hearing a broad range of views and perspectives at tomorrow’s discussions. I want to thank all those who took the time to submit thoughtful and detailed submissions, which we will have the opportunity to engage with in more detail tomorrow.

“Tomorrow’s session will include a focus on young people. It is crucial that their voices are heard, as we look at the future of Ireland and how this will impact on younger generations.

“The future of a new Ireland belongs to us all and everyone’s voice is important as this dialogue progresses and continues. It is clear that there is a growing, inclusive and energetic conversation taking place across our island about how to secure a future which improves everyone’s lives. I look forward to those conversations progressing through this committee hearing.”

Note to editors: The Seanad Public Consultation Committee on the Constitutional Future of the Island of Ireland will hold its first session on Friday 30th September, with discussions taking place from 11am -1pm and 2pm- 5pm.
