‘School uniforms must be more affordable for families’ – Mason

Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason has said school uniforms must be more affordable for parents and families.

Speaking following the publication of the latest Irish League of Credit Unions Annual School Costs Survey, the South Down MLA said:

“With September just around the corner, soaring back-to-school costs will once again hit the pockets of workers and families. The astronomical costs of school uniforms and PE gear must be reduced.

“Sinn Féin’s Affordable Uniforms Bill will keep money in the pockets of struggling parents by making uniforms more affordable.

“This legislation would require schools to carry out a competitive tendering process, remove requirements for expensive branded items, and permit the use of affordable high street alternatives.

“I will continue working with the other parties to help bring down the costs of school uniforms and PE gear.”
