Sinn Féin TD for Mayo, Rose Conway-Walsh, has welcomed the long-awaited Sodium Valproate Inquiry into the prescribing of Epilim to pregnant women.
Speaking in the Dáil today, Teachta Conway-Walsh said:
“Having worked with the families impacted by the prescribing of Sodium Valproate over the past eight years, I have seen the anguish they have endured.
“Some families have more than one child or young adult born with developmental disorders, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and disabilities.
“They seek the truth and justice.
“I truly hope that this independent inquiry will deliver that.
“That can only be achieved if the inquiry exposes when it was known that this drug had serious risks for unborn babies.
“We need to know who knew this information and why there was nothing done about it for decades.
“This is not unique to Ireland. We have seen Britain produce the ‘First Do No Harm’ report, after an Independent review of harrowing patient testimony. The French state has accepted their responsibility and set up a multi-million euro ‘state compensation fund’ to compensate the victims.
“Families must be at the centre of this inquiry. Their lived experiences must inform and guide the work of the inquiry at every stage.
“I commend OACS Ireland, Epilepsy Ireland and all the families for their tenacity and bravery.”
