Sinn Féin MLA Ciara Ferguson has said rising levels of child homelessness is ‘deeply concerning and must be tackled’.
Speaking after the release of new figures showing that the number of children living in temporary accommodation has more than doubled in five years, the party’s housing spokesperson said:
“The latest figures showing over 5,300 children are now homeless in the north is deeply concerning and must be tackled.
“Every child deserves a home that is safe and secure for them and their family.
“The lack of housing, particularly social and affordable homes, is impacting homelessness and has led to increased pressure on homelessness services.
“The publication of the new housing supply strategy is welcome, with the aim of building over 100,000 homes within the next fifteen years, as well as a commitment to homelessness prevention.
“While increasing housing supply is key, the strategy also highlights the importance of ensuring homes are affordable and available in areas of highest need.
“I will also be bringing legislation to the Assembly in this mandate to strengthen protections for renters in private rented accommodations from unfair letting agent fees.
“By working together, we can tackle homelessness and ensure children and their families do not have to spend their Christmas’ living in temporary accommodation.”
