Resumption of air strikes in Gaza represents gross failure of international community – Matt Carthy TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Matt Carthy TD, has condemned the resumption of air strikes by Israel against the people of Gaza.  He said the renewed bombardment represents a gross failure on the part of the international community to stand up to Israeli breaches of international law.

Speaking today, Teachta Carthy said:

“The resumption of Israeli air strikes against the people of Gaza must be totally condemned.

“It amounts to an unnecessary continuation of the despicable bombardment against the Palestinian people for nearly two months – itself an unprecedented escalation of the breaches of international law that Israel have been committing for decades.

“Recent ceasefires allowed for some progress to be made through dialogue and negotiation – the ceasefire must be reinstated to allow these talks to resume.

“The resumption of the bombardment, which will undoubtedly result in the substantial further loss of civilian life in Gaza, represents a gross failure on the part of the international community to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law.

“World leaders must demand that Israel ends this violence immediately. We must see an urgent ceasefire and a focus on peaceful talks and mediation to prevent even more loss of human life.

“Ireland must take a lead in sending a message to Israel that their actions are unacceptable.  All available political, diplomatic and economic measures must be deployed by the Irish government to press the case for an end to all military actions and to achieve full ceasefires, the immediate release of all hostages and the necessary humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

“Ultimately, the resumption of the bombardment on Gaza points again to the need for a decisive international intervention in this conflict. Rigorous, impartial international leadership is required to bring about a durable and just solution to the Palestinian question. That can only be based upon unconditional adherence to international law and the UN Charter.”
