Programme for Government is a positive step forward – McGuigan

Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has welcomed the publication of the Programme for Government (PfG) by the Executive.

He said while the PfG is ‘ambitious’, the Executive is determined to do more and continue delivering for people here.

Mr McGuigan said:

“This document sets out an ambitious set of priorities which the Executive is determined to deliver on to improve the lives of workers, families and communities.

“The targets included in the PfG are welcome and will help to guide delivery, and provide a roadmap to making a positive difference in people’s lives.

“Despite this, we want to do more. Over a decade of cuts and austerity from the British government has stripped public services to the bone and damaged communities.

“While we are working through this and pressing for fairer funding, the Executive will ensure our existing resources are deployed as best we can to protect our public services.

“Our previous and current Finance Ministers have consistently made the case to the British Treasury for the north to be properly funded. We will continue to do so.

The North Antrim MLA also highlighted the potential which lies ahead in a new Ireland.

“There are enormous opportunities ahead to break with old ways and build a new and better future.

“One that supports workers and families, invests in public services, creates a stronger education system and uplifts communities.

“It is only through building a new Ireland will we fully realise our potential.

“This Programme for Government is a positive step forward. But our ambition for our people is far greater.”
