‘Paramilitary element in recent disorder deeply concerning’ – Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has been reacting to the assessment by the PSNI that they have “no doubt” there is a “paramilitary element” to recent racist disorder in Belfast.

The party’s policing spokesperson said:

“It is deeply concerning but not surprising that police have today said they have ‘no doubt’ there is a ‘paramilitary element’ to recent racist violence in Belfast.

“These comments by Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones are further evidence of the long-known partnership between some loyalists and members of the far right.

“Loyalist spokespersons should now be challenged to explain their position on the violent scenes witnessed on our streets. They should not be allowed to hide from public scrutiny.

“I once again want to reiterate that there is no place for racism, hate, discrimination or intimidation anywhere in our society.”
