‘One Island-One Environment’ discussion to be hosted in Dublin

Lynn Boylan MEP has announced this week that she will host an event entitled ‘One Island, One Environment’ which will take place in the Ballymun Rediscovery Centre  in Dublin on Friday 4th April from 11am-1pm.

This event is being hosted jointly by Lynn and Sinn Féin’s Commission on the Future of Ireland. The discussion will be led by an independent Chairperson and panel and is an opportunity for environmental activists to become involved in the discussion on Irish Unity.

Lynn Boylan MEP said:

“I am delighted to host this event and would encourage environmental activists, those working in the sector and anyone interested in the discussion around Climate Change to come along and have your say.

“The issue of constitutional change is now firmly fixed on the political agenda. The conversation on the merits of a United Ireland – of a new shared Ireland – is now widespread. We must plan for it. We must discuss how best to shape the new Ireland for this and future generations.

“On the back of the ‘Linking the Irish Environment Report’ which was launched in 2023 and highlighted the need for greater north/south cooperation on environmental issues, we want to discuss why environmental action would be stronger in a united Ireland.

“Issues such as Brexit and its impact on climate/environment/water regulations, unified climate targets, the potential for energy independence, an all island approach to biodiversity loss and much more will be covered on the day.

“There has been an increase in support for Irish Unity over the last number of years. For us the priority is particularly for the Government in Dublin to establish a structured conversation, to analyze and examine all of the issues relating to constitutional change, so that people are fully informed of what that involves.

“Understandably citizens want to know what this new Ireland will look like. Sinn Féin’s Commission on the Future of Ireland has been tasked with encouraging this debate. Thus far it has held public meetings across all parts of the island discussing the future shape of the new Ireland with business and community leaders, women’s organisations, trade unionists, academics, young people, Gaeilgeoirí, health workers and with people from Protestant/ Unionist backgrounds.

“The environment and the threat posed by climate change is often overlooked in the United Ireland discussion. I want to broaden it out so climate activists and environmentalists can see why a United Ireland offers hope and opportunities to go further and faster.”
