Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason has called on the education and health authorities to work together to maintain onsite nurses in special schools.

This follows a decision by the South Eastern Trust to withdraw dedicated support in Knockevin Special School. The removal of on-site nurses has been paused in the other special schools in the Trust area, as directed by the Minister, after the issue was raised with him.

The party’s early years spokesperson has consistently raised this issue with both the Health and Education Ministers, as well as departmental officials, most recently at a joint meeting of the Health and Education Committees on Wednesday. 

The South Down MLA said:

“Knockevin, like all special schools, need and deserve an on-site nurse to meet the complex health needs of its children.

“The decision to remove this service from Knockevin is concerning and unacceptable, and places undue stress on the young people affected, as well as their parents and teachers.

“Comments from health officials today suggested that this change was made in collaboration with the school; however, this is not the case. The school was not consulted when this decision was made.

“I am calling on the Department of Education and the Department of Health to work with the Trust to urgently restore the on-site nurse, and to ensure an issue like this does not arise again. 

“These are the most vulnerable children in our society. They should not have to fight for the support they need—they should receive it as a matter of course.

“On-site nurses are essential, not optional, and Sinn Féin will continue working with families, schools, and health workers to ensure every child receives the care they are entitled to.”
