Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing, Eoin Ó Broin TD, has said that the latest MyHome.ie house price report confirms that the government is underestimating housing need and under-delivering on public and private housing output.
The Dublin Mid-West TD added that the accompanying analysis provided by Bank of Ireland to MyHome.ie confirms both the Housing Commission’s analysis and Sinn Féin’s call for housing output to be doubled to an average of at least 60,000 new homes a year over the next five years.
Teachta Ó Broin said:
“The latest MyHome.ie house price report shows house prices spiralling ever upwards in the third quarter of this year.
“In the accompanying analysis from Bank of Ireland, the report makes clear that the government’s housing targets are based on an underestimate of housing need and that the government’s plan is under-delivering on both public and private housing output.
“The report calls for a doubling of housing output, in line with both the Housing Commission’s recommendations and Sinn Féin’s alternative housing plan, A Home Of Your Own.
“Until we reach an average of 60,000 new homes a year, with at least 25,000 of these to be social and affordable, then house prices and rents will continue to rise.
“Only a change of government and the implementation of Sinn Féin’s alternative housing plan, A Home Of Your Own, will bring home ownership back into the reach of working people.
“Sinn Féin’s plan would deliver 300,000 public and private homes over five years; homes that are secure, adequate and affordable.”
