More must be done to improve suicide prevention services, training and awareness – Flynn Flynn

Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn has said more must be done to prevent lives being lost to suicide in the north.

Speaking after the release of Suicide Statistics for 2023 by NISRA, the West Belfast MLA said.

“Too many families are continuing to suffer after losing a loved one to suicide. Deaths by suicide are preventable and we must do all that we can to help people in their time of need.

“Over 75% of deaths by suicide are attributed to men, so it is particularly important that there is a focus on ensuring that men can access services and their loved ones encourage them to seek help when they are in need.

“Many people are struggling to find the right healthcare for poor mental health, mental illness and addictions, sadly many of them will not live long enough to get the support they need.

“While the Minister’s commitment to prioritise mental health services is welcome, more must be done to improve suicide prevention services, training and awareness.

“It is my intention to bring legislation to the Assembly which would ensure that suicide prevention training is offered to all frontline public sector workers.

“This devastating issue affects our families, our friends and loved ones and we must all work together, to ensure that suicide prevention is a priority for all of us.”
