Sinn Fein spokesperson on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Rose Conway-Walsh TD, has sent her solidarity to staff in the Irish division of TikTok following the announcement of up to 300 job losses.
Teachta Conway-Walsh has also written to Enterprise Minister Peter Burke to ask him to undertake an audit of job volatility in the tech sector.
Teachta Conway-Walsh said:
“This announcement by TikTok follows warnings of potential job losses at the company throughout 2024 and it comes just a week after the announcement of job losses in Meta’s Dublin division.
“Given the volatility in the sector, and its importance to the Irish economy, I have asked the Minister for Enterprise to commission an audit into job security across the Tech sector.
“I have also asked him to ensure that the affected workers at TikTok receive all of their entitlements and I urge TikTok to treat these workers with fairness in terms of providing adequate redundancy packages.
“The government must ensure investment is targeted to maintain our competitiveness and to protect jobs. Addressing infrastructure deficits, investing in education and skills, enabling decarbonisation and energy security must be a priority.
“In this time of geopolitical turbulence we must look to the actions that are within our control to provide stability for investors, employers and employees.”
