Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said important steps can be made during this mandate to protect people from gambling.
Speaking after a cross-party motion calling for a health-led approach to gambling passed in the Assembly today, the North Antrim MLA said:
“Unfortunately, thousands of people in the north experience gambling harm, and I have first-hand experience of the devastating consequences this disease can have.
“Although we recognise there isn’t sufficient time to overhaul gambling legislation during this mandate, there are important steps we can take to better protect people from gambling.
“Working alongside other relevant departments, we are calling on the Department of Health to bring forward a plan to develop support services for those experiencing issues with gambling.
“These must be integrated into all relevant strategies including mental health and suicide prevention, with the condition recognised as a public health issue in the north.
“I am committed to working with ministers and the other parties to bring about real change for those experiencing harm from gambling, ensuring compassionate, fit-for-purpose support is available when needed.”
