Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has called for action on the issues facing GP practices following a meeting with the British Medical Association (BMA).
Speaking after the meeting in the Assembly today, the party’s health spokesperson said:
“GPs are facing extreme pressure which is having a significant impact on appointment availability, and they deserve our full support.
“The ongoing negotiations on GP indemnity are welcome and will provide some help to practices, but we must see these resolved as soon as possible.”
Mr McGuigan also called for additional steps to be taken to better support practices.
“The Health Minister previously stated his aim to support a more community-based model of healthcare, and I would urge him to get on with this and prioritise GP core funding.
“Addressing current primary care issues are key to future proofing community healthcare services and GP practices. This will mean, in time, more patients being treated locally, directing patients away from under-pressure settings such as hospitals.
“As we work to transform the north’s health system, I’m determined to continue working with the minister and the other parties to ensure services are appropriate, of good-quality and accessible to all.”
