MacManus discusses future of farming with Donegal agricultural consultant

Sinn Féin MEP Chris MacManus recently held a discussion with agricultural consultant Mark McConnell at his offices in Stranorlar alongside local election candidate Dakota Nic Mheanman. The discussion focused on growing concerns within the agricultural community in Donegal and across Ireland.

“Our discussions shed light on the diverse farming practices in the region, including tillage, dairy, and the challenges associated with nitrates management. The frustration and anger from the recent farmer protests across Ireland and Europe underscore the urgent need for fair compensation and support for our farmers who are committed to following regulations.

“Farmers are grappling with the harsh realities of fluctuating prices for their produce, increased costs of production, and stringent regulations that do not match the financial realities on the ground. The manner of the introduction of measures such as the fertiliser register, banding of dairy cows, and nitrates reduction, has left many undervalued.

“The current state of affairs, including the potential strike by advisers and the disengagement of the Department, points to a deeper issue of lack of meaningful dialogue and support for those who feed our nation.

“Additionally, the push towards organic farming, while financially incentivising, does not address the systemic issues faced by farmers, we need investment in organic processors and promote consumer demand.

“As a representative of rural Ireland in Europe, I am committed to voicing these concerns at both the national and European levels. It is imperative that we engage in a constructive conversation about sustainable farming practices that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable. We must ensure that our farmers are adequately compensated for their invaluable contribution to our society and that the regulatory framework supports rather than hinders their efforts.

“The time for action is now. We must work collaboratively to find solutions that respect the dignity of farming, ensure food security, and preserve our rural landscapes for future generations.” ENDS
