Kimmins asks health minister to consider signing up to early access programme for treatment for DMD

Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has said the health minister should consider signing up to the early access programme for Givinostat, a potentially life-altering drug for those suffering with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

The party’s health spokesperson said:

“I have written to the health minister urging him to sign up to this early access programme that could help to alleviate some of the worst symptoms of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

“DMD is a progressive and often life-limiting disease. Muscle wasting, immobility and severe effects on the heart and lungs are some of the symptoms associated with this awful condition.

“DMD can often mean that sufferers have great difficulty with mobility and can even mean everyday tasks such as eating and showering are extremely difficult with many sufferers requiring 24/7 care.

“I am asking the minister to do everything in his power to ensure that patients here can get access to Givinostat. For many patients this drug can help to slow the progression of the disease and help them manage their condition and prolong their independence.”
