Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has today brought the DAERA Minister Andrew Muir to meet a delegation of local commercial fishermen and other stakeholders involved in environmental tourism around Lough Neagh to discuss the impact of blue-green algae on fishing and tourism associated with the Lough.
The South Antrim MLA said:
“I am pleased that the Minister has finally met with me and a delegation of local fishermen and stakeholders in Toomebridge.
“This was an important opportunity for the DAERA Minister to hear first hand the scale of the economic and financial problems being endured by the lough shore community as a direct result of the environmental disaster engulfing Lough Neagh.
“The future viability of fishing in Lough Neagh is now at stake, with fishermen and other businesses facing serious financial pressures. They deserve to be fully supported, kept informed and reassured by the department.
“Also, environmental tourism, which was once thriving on and around the Lough, has witnessed a significant decline, and we raised this concern directly with the minister.
“The Minister’s action plan for tackling issues facing Lough Neagh is a positive first step, and we must now see a full commitment from his department for dealing with issues on and surrounding Lough Neagh.
“I will continue working with local fishermen and the other parties to protect the Lough’s stunning beauty and its essential roles in the environment, tourism, fishing and water supply.”
