The Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South, Kathleen Funchion, has said that she will bring the voices and concerns of people in the north of Ireland to the European Parliament.
Funchion was speaking after the Constitutive Meeting of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Britain, of which she is a full member.
MEP Funchion said:
“As a Sinn Féin MEP – I am committed to working towards the north once again re-joining the EU as part of a United Ireland. As part of my work towards that end, I will serve as a full member of the European Parliament delegation for relations with Britain.
“This will not only be a platform for advancing and promoting Irish Reunification, but will be a platform for addressing the democratic deficit for citizens in the north as well.
“During my time as a Teachta Dala, I was committed to working in a cross-party collaborative way. I will bring my experience as Cathaoirleach of the Joint Oireachtas Committee for the Good Friday Agreement and the Joint Oireachtas Committee for Children, Disability, Equality, Integration and Youth to this new role and continue to push the current Irish government to ensure they begin the work of Irish unification, and that starts with publishing a green paper.
“We in Sinn Féin are committed to standing up for everyone, across the 32 counties of Ireland – and I will use this delegation to bring the voices and the concerns of people in the north to the European Parliament.”
