Irish Unity is the future – Murphy

Two months ago – 28 June – the Sinn Féin Commission on the Future of Ireland organised a major conference in the Europa Hotel looking at Irish Unity and the All-Island Economy’. It was the 16th public event organised by the Commission since it was established two years ago.

Today the Commission publishes the report of the Europa conference which brought together Sinn Féin three senior economic spokespersons – Pearse Doherty TD, Caoimhe Archibald MLA and Conor Murphy MLA.

Commenting on the publication of the report, Conor Murphy said:

“There is now an overwhelming body of economic and political opinion favouring a future for the island of Ireland based on Irish Unity. In particular significant senior economists, including John Doyle of DCU, Seamus McGuinness of the ESRI and others, have long maintained that a united Ireland can provide for a prosperous, stable and beneficial future for all the people of Ireland.

“Irish Unity can unlock the full potential of the island economy, with the full suite of economic levers available, fully within the framework of European Union membership.

“A range of economic forecasts have predicted that Irish Unity and the all-island economy will lead to a stronger economy. This in turn will provide the basis for better health and education services, job creation and an enhancement in the standard of living of all citizens.

“The key to making all of this work effectively is planning. Constitutional change is now fixed on the political horizon. Conversations about the constitutional future of the island of Ireland are happening across the country and beyond.

“To be successful we need a plan which shapes out through inclusive dialogue what form and shape the new Ireland can look like.  That means those of us who want Irish Unity creating the space in which all views can be discussed honestly and transparently.

“Citizens want to know what the new Ireland will mean for them and their families. A strong and fair economy is the basis for a thriving society. The report of the Europa Conference – ‘Irish Unity and the All Island Economy’- is a further contribution by Sinn Féin to this conversation.”
