Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn has said more must be done to improve mental health services in the north.

The party’s mental health spokesperson was speaking after the release of the Registrar General’s 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.

Órlaithí Flynn said:

“Tragically, many families continue to lose loved ones to suicide. These deaths are preventable, and we must do all that we can to help people at their time of need.

“Too many people struggle to find the right healthcare for poor mental health, and sadly many of them will not live long enough to get the support they need.

“While the minister’s work to improve health services across all communities is welcome, more must be done to improve support for poor mental health and suicide prevention.

“It is my intention to bring legislation to the Assembly which would ensure that suicide prevention training is offered to all frontline public sector workers.

“This devastating issue affects our families, our friends and loved ones.  By working together, we can improve mental health services and ensure the health of all our people is a priority.”
