Hughes expresses condolences following ‘tragic’ death of care worker

Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes has expressed his sincere condolences to the family of Anu Okusanya, a care worker who tragically died in hospital last week.

The Newry and Armagh MP said:

“My first thoughts are with Anu’s loved ones as they attempt to come to terms with her tragic passing.

“Anu, a health worker who devoted her life to caring for others, attempted to raise the alarm on a gang who was beating up an individual in Newry, a group which she recognised as they had attacked her twice before.

“Unfortunately when doing so, Anu collapsed suddenly and died days later in hospital.

“It is absolutely disgusting that racist thugs in our society have instilled such a fear factor in international members of our community who have come here to live and work.

“The previous attacks on Anu were absolutely sickening, uncalled for and despicable. Diversity is something to be welcomed, to be championed and to be promoted.

“Racism is a stain on our society. There can be no justification for these acts of violence or intimidation in our community.

“I hope Anu’s family and friends find comfort in the time ahead knowing of her selfless, loving and caring nature. May she rest in peace.”
