‘Huge opportunities lie ahead in a new Ireland’ – Hughes

Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes this week addressed Labour for Irish Unity’s ‘Towards Irish Unity’ event in Westminster.

The panel included Professor Colin Harvey and was chaired by MP John McDonnell and Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts.

The Newry and Armagh MP said:

“This was a fantastic chance to discuss Irish unity and the growing momentum around the campaign for a new Ireland.

“People on our island are increasingly demanding that decisions about their lives and their futures be made at home, in Ireland.

“All sections of society are now actively engaged and discussing the huge opportunities which lie ahead to attract investment, create better jobs and strengthen public services.

“With a general election just around the corner, the incoming Irish government must make planning and preparation for constitutional change a priority.

“Under a Sinn Féin-led government, we would publish a green paper on Irish unity, establish an inclusive and welcoming Citizens’ Assembly and create a Minister for Reunification at the Department of An Taoiseach.

“The time to plan and prepare has come. This is the decade of opportunity and we must grasp it with both hands.”
