Housing supply shortages placing pressure on workers and businesses – Louise O’Reilly TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Workers’ Rights, Louise O’Reilly TD, has said government must get to grips with the housing crisis by ramping up supply of affordable homes.

A MyHome.ie report published today revealed demand for homes continues to far outpace supply.

Teachta O’Reilly said:

“Today’s report confirms what has been clear for some time, demand for housing is continuing to far outpace supply. The housing crisis is continuing to get worse and worse with every year that this government remains in office.

“There were 11,600 properties available for sale on MyHome at the end of end 2023, substantially below the pre-pandemic figure of more than 20,000. For workers on ordinary and modest incomes, the dream of owning their own home is slipping ever further from reach.

“Supply issues are causing real challenges for workers and employers alike. Many Gardaí, nurses, teachers and other workers have either had to turn down work due to lack of suitable accommodation nearby or else face long and exhausting commutes.

“Businesses are struggling to fill key positions due to lack of housing supply, which in turn undermines Ireland’s ability to be an attractive place for companies to invest and grow.

“Government must act to end the housing crisis without delay. 2024 must be the year when people see long overdue change. Delivering housing would be the number one priority of a Sinn Féin government.”
