Homelessness reaches new grim all-time record in January – Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing, Eoin Ó Broin TD, has said that ‘it is time for this Government to go’.

The Dublin Mid West TD added that ‘as homelessness reaches a grim all-time record in January it is clear that this administration cannot and will not address the escalating levels of homelessness’.

Teachta Ó Broin said:

“The latest Department of Housing homelessness report shows that, in January, a total of 13,531 people, including 4,027 children, were in emergency accommodation funded by that Department.

“As homelessness reaches a grim all-time record in January, it is clear that this administration can not and will not address the escalating levels of homelessness.

“It is time for this Government to go. Years of appeals for an emergency response have fallen on deaf ears. Countless proposals from Sinn Féin, other opposition parties and homeless services providers have been ignored.

“It is now patently clear that this Government does not care about addressing the homelessness crisis. It is not a priority for them. As long as they are in Government, the worse things will get.

“We need a general election, a new Government and a radical change in policy that will make ending long term homelessness and the need to sleep round a priority.”
