Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí Doolan has said that Greyhound’s decision to slap customers with a 10% price hike for green bin collections is punishing the public for using the Deposit Return Scheme.
The Dublin City Councillor added that this was another example of corporate greed that highlighted the need for domestic bin services to be returned to local authorities.
Cllr Doolan said:
“The Greyhound waste collection company have hit customers with a 10% price hike on the collection of green bins. The price increase kicks in next month.
“This increase is punishing the public because they are availing of the successful Deposit Return Scheme.
“Private waste companies are missing out on the €15m generated by the successful return scheme, and they are punishing the public for this.
“This example of corporate greed highlights yet again why the domestic bin service needs to be returned to the local authorities.
“This government must introduce the legislation that allows local authorities to take the bin service back into public ownership.
“Householders need and deserve a bin collection service that meets their needs, not the need of private greed.
“This would benefit the householder, the workers and the environment.”
