Sinn Féin spokesperson on Workers’ Rights, Johnny Guirke TD, has said he stands firmly with SIPTU members who have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in their ongoing battle for fair pay and conditions to health and community workers in Section 39 organisations.
The strike vote comes in response to the government’s failure to honour a pay agreement reached at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) in October 2023.
This agreement promised to restore the pay link between public sector wages and those in the community and voluntary sector – a commitment that remains unfulfilled.
Deputy Guirke added that, with a remarkable 96% in favour and a turnout of 70%, this mandate highlights the urgent need for change and recognition of the vital work performed by these dedicated individuals.
Teachta Guirke said:
“Today, we reaffirm our support for SIPTU and all health and community workers in Section 39 organisations who provide essential care in our communities.
“These workers, who deliver crucial health and social services, deserve to be treated with the dignity and respect they have long been denied. It is unacceptable that they are viewed as second-class citizens compared to their public sector counterparts.
“Successive governments have neglected the needs of Section 39 workers, leaving them to struggle with low wages while facing relentless recruitment and retention crises.
“It is imperative that the government recognises the invaluable contributions of these workers and takes immediate action to implement the 2023 agreement in full.
“The workers have waited long enough. Minister Foley and her colleagues must come to the table with a concrete plan to resolve this situation. Our healthcare system relies on the dedication of these workers, and they deserve compensation that reflects their essential role.
“I am calling on the government to prioritize the rights and needs of Section 39 organisations and their workers. It is critical that agreements are honoured, and that fair pay and working conditions are established.
“The time for empty promises is over. I will ensure that their voices are heard and that they receive the respect and remuneration they rightfully deserve.”
