Sinn Féin spokesperson onHousing, Eoin Ó Broin TD, has said that the government’s housing plan is in tatters.
The Dublin Mid-West TDs comments were made as the Central Statistics Office (CSO) published the full year completion figures for 2024.
Teachta Ó Broin said:
“Throughout 2024, the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Minister for Housing said that 40,000 new homes would be built. They repeated this claim despite the CSO quarterly figures showing new home completions plummeting.
“Today, the CSO has released their final new home completion figures for 2024. The figures show that completions plummeted by almost 7% compared to 2023. 30,330 new homes were built last year compared to 32,695 in 2023.
“The government’s housing plan is in tatters. Their public and private housing targets for last year were too low. The government has not only missed their social and affordable housing targets but also their overall target.
“The reason for the sluggish output is that the government has refused to make the necessary reforms to public and private housing delivery. If this continues in the new government, as is likely, then the housing crisis will continue to deepen.
“Only a radical reset of housing policy as recommended by Sinn Féin and the Housing Commission will lead to increased public and private housing supply.”
