Furlough extension and self-employed support will provide much needed clarity for workers and families – Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said the extension of the furlough scheme to September 2021 and the announcement of further support for the self-employed will provide some clarity for workers and families.

The party’s economic spokesperson said:

“The extension of the furlough scheme until the end of September 2021 is good news for businesses, workers and families.

“This will give much-needed clarity to businesses. It is unfortunate, however, that the British government has had a piecemeal approach to job support rather than providing assurances that the support would be there while businesses needed it.

“It is also welcome news that there will be a further grant for the self-employed.

“There is also a long overdue move to extend this grant to use 2019/20 tax returns. Some of those previously excluded from the Self Employed Income Support Scheme, because they hadn’t filed a 2018/19 tax return or didn’t meet the threshold of income from self-employment, will now benefit.

“It’s absolutely vital that workers, businesses and families have adequate financial support as we continue on our path to recovery from the pandemic.

“Sinn Féin will continue to support workers, families and businesses during these uncertain economic times.”
