Finucane urges department to protect local waterways

Sinn Féin MP John Finucane has written to the minister responsible for protecting our waterways following the discovery of blue-green algae in Wolfhill Dam, Ligoneil.

The North Belfast MP said:

“I am deeply concerned at the discovery of blue-green algae in one of Ligoneil’s dams.

“I have written to the DAERA Minister Andrew Muir requesting an urgent on-site meeting to ensure this issue is dealt with quickly and that an action plan is developed, including support for the local organisation who help to maintain the dam. I have also invited Belfast City Council and The Rivers Agency.

“With Boodles Dam and Waterworks Park in close proximity to the affected dam, I would urge the department to move at speed to prevent the further spread of this toxic algae.

“It is vital we do all that we can to protect the high volume of wildlife in these waterways, and that we ensure families can continue to enjoy these fantastic pieces of nature on their doorsteps.”
