Ferguson welcomes funding to tackle homelessness

Sinn Féin MLA Ciara Ferguson has welcomed an announcement from the communities minister allocating £6.7 million to tackle homelessness.

The party’s housing spokesperson said:

“It’s welcome that in responding to a cross-party motion on Monday, the minister announced additional funding for both the Housing Executive and homelessness organisations.

“This will enable organisations to better plan for the delivery of services, as well as retaining and recruiting more staff.

“With housing waiting lists growing there is increased pressure on those working to tackle homelessness, therefore there is a real need for this funding.

“Of course more must be done to tackle homelessness, and we would again call on the minister to publish the housing supply strategy.

“For our part, Sinn Féin will bring forward legislation which would extend the period during which the Housing Executive is required  to support and prevent someone at risk of becoming homeless.

“The Private Members’ Bill will extend the homeless prevention period from 28 to at least 56 days, ensuring the Housing Executive offer support over a longer period.”
