Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said ‘huge potential’ lies ahead of us on the island of Ireland through investment and job creation.
Speaking on the 5th anniversary of Brexit, the North Antrim MLA said:
“Today marks the 5th anniversary of Brexit, and with that the north’s unwanted departure from the EU.
“Alongside Sinn Féin, the majority of parties on the island opposed Brexit, warning of the detrimental impact it would have on communities here.
“The protocol has protected our economy from the worst excesses of Brexit, and thanks to our unique dual market access the north continues to thrive as a vibrant place to invest and do business in. Fortunately, the Assembly voted late last year to maintain these arrangements for a further four years.
“However, we continue to face serious issues as a result of the Brexit mess, including the loss of vital funding for grassroots organisations through the European Social Fund. While the British government committed to replacing this in full, we are yet to see this promise fulfilled.
“Also, the Electronic Travel Authorisation Scheme, which non-European travellers now require when entering the north, threatens over £200 million of revenue which our local economy enjoys from these visitors.
“Despite this, our island has enormous potential ahead to continue attracting investment, boosting trade, creating jobs and strengthening our economy.
“As we chart our way back to the EU through a new Ireland, Sinn Féin will continue to stand up in the best interests of workers and families, here on the island and abroad.”
