Sinn Féin MP Orfhlaith Begley has welcomed the allocation of over €16m of PEACEPLUS funding to deliver the long-awaited cross-border Riverine Project between Strabane and Lifford as transformative for the local area.
The West Tyrone MP said:
“I welcome today’s announcement by the Special EU Programmes Body that over €16m of PEACEPLUS funding is being granted to deliver the long-awaited cross-border Riverine Project between Strabane and Lifford.
“The 30-acre project will see the development of an iconic shared parkland facility that will include a pavilion building to facilitate cultural activities, an adventure play area for young families and a footbridge linking the towns Strabane and Lifford.
“This is a truly transformative investment for the Strabane and Lifford communities, and it comes on the back of ongoing work by Sinn Féin representatives to overcome earlier planning delays within An Bord Pleanála.
“An Bord Pleanála finally granted planning permission last February and a fresh funding application for the project was submitted by Derry City and Strabane councils and Donegal County Council in September.
“Sinn Féin is committed to anchoring investment in the west and this cross border project underlines the progress which can be made through continued work and all-Ireland co-operation.”
