Sinn Féin spokesperson for Dublin, Mark Ward TD, has welcomed the news that redevelopment work in Dublin’s Victorian fruit and vegetable market is to get under way in June.
Deputy Ward called for the market, which is located near Capel Street, to be a living market that is affordable to locals.
Teachta Ward said:
“It is welcome news that the Victorian fruit and vegetable market, near Capel Street, will finally be redeveloped.
“This is a huge opportunity to revitalise the market building that is over 130 years old, and which closed in 2019 after 127 years of operation.
“It has been reported that there will be at least 80 stalls when the market reopens in 2027. This will bring great opportunities for traders and local businesses.
“It is important that when it does reopen that it is a living market for Dubliners that live in the area.
“I have visited the English Market in Cork and although this is also a tourist attraction, the prices are affordable, which means that it is also of huge benefit for the local people there.
“This is the hope that I have for the market; that it will be a great re-addition to Dublin’s city centre and will benefit the local businesses and residents.”
