Sinn Féin Leader on Dublin City Council, Cllr Daithí Doolan, has said Dublin Fire Brigade must receive the resources they need to ensure fire fighters can do their jobs safely and properly.
His comments follow concerns raised by SIPTU after recent violence in Coolock that Dublin Fire Brigade is under-resourced and there can be poor quality information about the risks involved when attending some calls.
Cllr Doolan said:
“I commend Dublin Fire Brigade for their crucial work, as they yet again faced totally unacceptable violence and threats while responding to recent events at the former Crown Paints site, Coolock. It should go without saying that they must be able to go about their work safely and free from this appalling intimidation and disruption.
“The incident at Crown Paints has highlighted the challenges the service can face, including ongoing issues of violence as well as recruitment, retainment and resources.
“The events in Coolock have also highlighted the lack of intelligence in identifying the sites for water hydrants. This must be addressed so that our firefighters have all the information and equipment they need before they arrive on the scene.
“I am calling on the Department to address these as a matter of urgency.
“Our firefighters do incredible work, often risking their lives to protect our communities. They should be able to have confidence that government will have their back and ensure they get the supports they need.”
