Dublin City Council agrees to urgent meeting with Minister for Housing – Cllr Daithí Doolan

Dublin City Council has tonight agreed to a Sinn Féin request for an urgent meeting with Minister Darragh O’Brien to discuss the failure to deliver affordable housing on the Oscar Traynor Road site.

Sinn Féin Leader on Dublin City Council, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, said that the Oscar Traynor Road fiasco raised fundamental questions about the Minister’s failure to deliver affordable housing in Dublin.

Cllr. Doolan said:

“Dublin City councillors tonight agreed to Sinn Féin’s request to hold an extraordinary meeting next week of the full council to discuss the inexcusable failure to deliver affordable housing at the site on Oscar Traynor Road and to ensure that this never happens again.

“Councillors also agreed to Sinn Féin’s request for an urgent meeting with Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien so that the Minister can be held to account for how this was allowed to happen under his watch.

“Sinn Féin warned Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil what would happen if this site was developed by private developers. It is now clear that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil councillors allowed themselves to be led up the garden path.

“As a result, what we now have at Oscar Traynor Road are eye-watering house prices that are not only beyond the reach of the vast majority of working people, but that are also significantly higher than the prices promised when the agreement with the developer was put in place.

“Once again, developers are laughing all the way to the bank while workers and families are denied the opportunity to purchase affordable homes in their community.

“The communities Sinn Féin represent want answers from Darragh O’Brien. And we intend to get answers.”
