Sinn Féin MLA Pádraig Delargy has said the decision not to prosecute former British soldiers for the killing of Annette McGavigan and William McGreanary is ‘deeply disappointing’ and extended solidarity to the families.
The Foyle MLA said:
“Today’s decision not to prosecute former British soldiers for the killing of Annette McGavigan and William McGreanary will be deeply disappointing for the families.
“Annette McGavigan was only 14 years-old when she was shot dead by the British Army in early September 1971, William McGreanary was shot dead only days later.
“Their families have been waiting 53 years for truth and justice and I have no doubt they will continue that campaign with dignity and determination.
“The people of Derry will support them in whatever steps they take next.
“On Wednesday, the British Government will pull down the shutters on families’ efforts to get justice through the courts when the shameful Legacy Act comes into effect.
“This cruel and cynical law is about one thing – cover up. It should be repealed, and the legacy mechanisms agreed at Stormont House implemented without delay.”
