Days of “No Cash/Card Only” signs must be numbered: MacManus

Sinn Féin Midlands North West MEP has said the days of shops refusing to accept cash must come to an end and that he intends to do this by closing possible loopholes in proposed regulations from the EU.

MacManus, who is on the key European Parliament negotiators on the file, said:

“The days of the sign reading “No Cash” or “Card Only” should be numbered. This week in an important intervention the ECB stressed in its Opinion that there remained some loopholes that must be closed in what the EU Commission has proposed so that a genuine cash friendly society can be fostered.

As a negotiator for the Left Group on this crucial file, I will be pushing for these loopholes to be closed. There can be no ambiguity – putting up a sign saying “No Cash” should not mean  a business can refuse cash payment. This is the current position of the Irish government which is dubious at best. I plan to use my position to make it cast-iron clear that cash is legal tender that people can use in their daily life without hindrance.

I welcome this intervention by the ECB and hope lawmakers in Brussels and Dublin pay close attention.”
