Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice, Pa Daly TD, has today called on the government to accelerate the gathering of data on Domestic, Sexual and Gender Based Violence (DSGBV) and sentencing. His call comes in the wake of a number of high profile cases.
Teachta Daly said:
“The recent case in Limerick, which saw an utterly appalling attack on a young woman, has sparked an important debate in relation to sentencing. Natasha O’Brien deserves our support and solidarity, as she has bravely spoken out about her experience.
“There is a separation of powers and judicial independence must be respected, as the courts are and should be independent in how they operate. However, at the same time, the policy issues this case, and others like it, have raised for legislators and the government are clear.
“We need to see a comprehensive approach to sentencing data, which I have queried with the Minister a number of times. The Judicial Council has a Sentencing Guidelines and Information Committee, and I have written to them to seek a meeting about their ongoing work.
“More comprehensive data on DSGBV is also needed. We need to continue to ensure the justice system dispenses proper justice, and that women’s safety is both protected and seen to be protected.”
