Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD, has described as ‘inhumane’ the actions of the Israeli Government in cutting off electricity to Gaza.
Teachta Ó Laoghaire said:
“The population of Gaza have endured hell on earth for the last year and a half.
“Despite the ceasefire, it remains an extremely serious humanitarian situation, with enormous numbers displaced, civilian infrastructure totally devastated, and healthcare provisions extremely limited.
“Gaza has been reduced to rubble, and the people of Gaza struggle every day. It is in that context that the Israeli Government has now decided to cut off electricity to Gaza.
“This will have profound implications for the welfare of the people of Gaza, will undermine healthcare, and people’s most fundamental needs in a location already decimated by the Israeli Government.
“This will affect issues such as the ability to access clean water, as desalinisation plants will not have energy to continue to treat water.
“Yet again the ordinary people of Gaza suffer at the hands of the policies of the Israeli Government.
“This is an inhumane act clearly intended to escalate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. I condemn it and call on the Irish Government to speak out against this further inhumanity to the people of Gaza.”
